Mia Alajasko
From her studio in Onsala, Swedish sculptor Mia Alajasko creates ceramic works that bring the ocean to life in clay. Best known for her octopus sculptures, she combines meticulous craftsmanship with an instinctive sense of form, shaping pieces that often rise up to 40cm in height.
Her process is rooted in experimentation and precision. By layering self-mixed glazes, Alajasko achieves surfaces that shift from soft, matte whites to deep, iridescent blues – a palette that captures both the fragility and the force of the sea. Each sculpture carries a sense of motion, as if the tentacles might continue to unfurl beyond the clay, embodying the ocean’s rhythm and vitality.
What sets her apart is not only her technical mastery, but her ability to infuse the material with atmosphere – transforming clay and glaze into living symbols of nature’s beauty and mystery.
