Shigeki Matsuyama
Shigeki Matsuyama is a Japanese contemporary artist whose practice examines the dynamics of digital society, collective behaviour and modern systems of justice. Through his work, he explores how anonymity and connectivity on the internet can transform individuals into powerful collective forces that both shape and disrupt social norms.
A central theme in Matsuyama’s practice is the duality of online identity. His work reflects how anonymous users, empowered by digital platforms, can act as self appointed agents of justice in ways that resemble masked heroes from popular culture. At the same time, he questions how these same mechanisms can shift into aggression, exclusion and social pressure when collective judgment becomes overwhelming.
Matsuyama’s work engages with the complexity of contemporary “cancel culture” and the blurred line between justice and oppression in online environments. He is interested in how quickly moral narratives can form and escalate within digital spaces, and how the roles of hero and villain can become interchangeable depending on perspective.
About Shigeki Matsuyama
Shigeki Matsuyama is a Japanese contemporary artist whose practice engages with themes of identity, society and communication in the digital age. His work often reflects on how contemporary life is shaped by online culture and collective behaviour, exploring the shifting boundaries between individual perspective and mass influence.
Rather than focusing on fixed narratives, Matsuyama’s practice examines how meaning is formed and transformed through shared environments and rapidly changing information flows. He is interested in how people construct opinions, values and identities within interconnected systems where visibility, anonymity and participation constantly overlap.
A recurring focus in his work is the tension between the individual and the collective. Matsuyama explores how personal expression can be amplified, altered or even absorbed within larger social structures, particularly in digital spaces where interaction is immediate and global. His works often reflect on how these dynamics influence perception, judgement and communication in everyday life.
Visually and conceptually, his practice is grounded in contemporary culture, drawing inspiration from the aesthetics and behaviours of online environments. Through this lens, he investigates how modern societies navigate questions of responsibility, influence and interpretation in an era defined by constant exchange of information.
Shigeki Matsuyama’s work ultimately reflects on the complexity of contemporary human interaction, offering a perspective on how identity and meaning are continuously reshaped within a connected world.
