James Mylne’s McQueen Vision is a masterclass in hyperrealistic ballpoint pen artistry, exemplifying his extraordinary ability to transform the simplest medium into a vessel of intense detail and emotional resonance. Created during the London lockdown of 2021, this work revisits the iconic presence of Steve McQueen, capturing not just his likeness but the spirit and charisma that made him a cultural legend. Mylne meticulously rendered the portrait over 469 hours across four months, working from a rare archival photograph to achieve an astonishing fidelity that blurs the line between photography and hand-drawn precision.

The work demonstrates Mylne’s signature approach: a careful orchestration of line, tone, and texture that brings out the essence of his subject while conveying a meditative sense of patience and focus. Every subtle shadow, every nuanced expression, speaks to the artist’s mastery of the ballpoint pen, a medium often underestimated yet here elevated to the level of fine art.

McQueen Vision is more than a portrait; it is an homage to cultural memory and the enduring magnetism of an icon. The piece invites viewers to contemplate both the intensity of McQueen’s presence and the extraordinary labor and dedication behind its creation, offering a rare glimpse into the convergence of technical skill, historical reflection, and artistic reverence.
